Apparently BIA was not DDD (wikipedia) : " producer Neil Dorfsman says the digital multitrack was mixed on an analog board with the resulting two track mix re-digitized via a Prism A/D converter and recorded on a DAT machine, so really the recording was DAD."
And this quote by Dorfman: "As the band had to fly back to London to rehearse for their 200-date tour, the Brothers In Arms mix took place over the course of six days on an SSL in Studio Two at the AIR facility on Oxford Street. There, about 20 Neve modules were inserted between the console and the tape machine in order to add a little warmth to the sound.
“I mixed to DAT with a very nice-sounding Prism converter and a pair of Auratones,” recalls Dorfsman. “I had been wanting to mix on Yamaha NS10s, which were fairly new at the time, but we couldn’t get them in London. So, I went with the Auratones — which should have been called Horrortones — and since I knew the record so well it wasn’t that hard.”
The 24 track digital was mixed down to 2 channel via an analog mixer and then A/D’d afterwards, so there were 24 D/As all with analog buffers, 24 analogue gain/EQ Neve stages, 2 A/D converters to get it back to digital.
Love over Gold was an analog recording. You can hear the companders (dbx?) working in the quiet parts, and it was known for the predominance of modulated tape hiss. We always regarded LOG as great music but the analog master tape hiss on the first generation Vertigo German pressed CDs made it unusable as a demonstration for CD or the benefits of digital. Later remasters killed the sound by excessive use of noise reduction algorithms IMO.
