There are two things to know about the GyroDec: 1) Stanley Kubrick selected an early iteration of it for A Clockwork Orange because he thought it looked like the future in 1971. (It still does.) 2) John Michell, the guy who designed this elegant piece of machinery, was a sci-fi visionary. He built the scale model Discovery spaceship for 2001: A Space Odyssey and C-3PO’s robotic eyes. The Gyro features an A.C. synchronous motor, two drive belts, and six brass inertia weights mounted beneath a precision milled aluminum platter that has the heft of a brick. Critics praised its drop-dead looks, superb build quality, and minimal sonic coloration. “Ludwig Van” never sounded so good.

SPEAKERS: ACOUSTAT MONITOR THREE
The young Steve Jobs was not into puny bookshelf speakers. These behemoths are five feet tall and tip the scales at 75 pounds. What makes them so special? To quote one owner, “It’s like listening to giant headphones: startlingly accurate, with low distortion.” Acoustats are known as ESLs, electrostatic loudspeakers. Unlike conventional speakers, which contain separate drivers, an ESL transmits sound waves by activating a low-mass diaphragm with charged electrons. Other boxes may pump out thumpier bass or shatter crystal with ungodly highs, but that’s just window dressing. The all-important midrange is where the meat of music resides, and the Acoustat’s mids are unrivaled. Put “Kind of Blue” on the platter, and you’ll be able to hear Miles puffing on a cigarette between solos.

Casually drop the phrase “Threshold amp” among even the most jaded audiophiles and you will command their immediate attention. Norman Pass, the California physicist behind these exquisitely engineered machines, is considered the guru of high-end amplifiers. In 1982, there were some amps that cost more, but none of them sounded better. The FET-One was Threshold’s reference preamp when the company was at its peak. It was designed to be paired with Pass’ best power amps, like the one in the next slide.

The $2,000 (on the used market) STASIS-1 is a 200 Watt per channel monoblock beast that looks like Darth Vader’s table radio. This FET-STASIS pairing was a perennial mainstay on Stereophile magazine’s Recommended Components list. Jobs likely appreciated the indulgent details just as much as the ingenious circuit topology. It featured chunky faceplates, gold-plated circuit boards, RCA jacks, machined aluminum knobs and – unlike Apple products – a factory upgrade service that staved off obsolescence. Don’t expect to find any Craigslist bargains. Like diamonds, these things hold their value.

The Denon TU-750s tuner isn’t the best looking piece of equipment in the room. In fact, it’s probably a stray component from Jobs’ previous stereo. But then again for someone whose passion was vinyl, a radio tuner was superfluous anyway. Jobs may have kept it for nostalgic purposes, like a favorite pair of old shoes that still had leather on the soles. In today’s digital world, tuners are as obsolete as rotary phones. The good news for fanboys is that it’s a buyer’s market; the TU-750s is tag sale fodder. For everyone else, plug a Macbook into the amp and stream radio stations directly from the Net. Static, drifting signals, and tweaking antennae is nothing to get nostalgic about.

Ну да, в 1982 году до революции еще было очень далеко и он слушал как и все винил или бабины ))))
Интересно, есть фоты его системы именно после свершения революции?

мне вот тоже интересно - зачем обсуждать систему времён динозавров. не думаю, что с 82-го года он так её и использовал.

Тут надо уточнить. В каком виде iphone был источником? выход миниджек на несимметричные входы усилителя? Думаю звук и правда будет плохим.
Тонарм вообще легендарный! Жаль,картридж не разглядел…

а мне не понятен смысл обсуждения фотографии 80-го года… мало ли где стив фотографировался для рекламы… вот, с трешольдом сфотографировался рядом 20 лет назад. и что?
казалось бы, причём тут электростаты и трешольд, рядом с которыми 20 лет назад сфотался один паренёк…
